My daughter Meghan has a hobby that is turning into a profession. She likes to resculpt and paint/pastel horse resins for show and sale. The above photos are three of her 2007 works in progress. They'll be going to a show in the fall. Stay tuned.
Having collected Breyer model horses as a kid, I find this fascinating! I knew some people like to repaint them, but I didn't know they could be resculpted.
The Breyer models aren't quite as easy to resculpt, but Meghan has done some modifications on them. These particular models are formed of a plastic that allows sanding, some paring away, etc. Then she uses a special material to add features like the braided mane and tail on the pony. He originally came with a very large flowing mane and tail. And was a stallion.
It is quite the process and she tries to do as much as possible when the weather cooperates as she has to spray each layer of color with a layer of acrylic spray to hold it. And then there is the primer original layer and the bondo to fill in casting holes and other imperfections. She'd love to have a studio with an exhaust fan, etc., but that won't be happening anytime soon.
Gorgeous pieces! She does beautiful work. I also collected the model horses when I was younger and did quite a bit of 'showing'. I did many repaints and had just started venturing into 'remaking' when I got out of it. Back then though things were very rudimentary. I'm amazed at the pieces that are being created now! Tammy
