ALL WORK & NO PLAY

Sometimes one just needs to get out and explore their own backyard.  After living in the Upper Peninsula for 30 years I've decided I really need to take more day trips and see what is all around me.  This is the view from our new bridge on County Road 510 that connects us with the cities and highways.
This is Tally and I after a hike to Canyon Falls.  I can only imagine how wonderful these falls would be on a spring day when all the snow is melting at once and will be returning to enjoy that rush.
Another more complete view of the falls.
Downstream from the falls where the water has carved out a wonderful, almost surreal canyon of slabs and shelves.
Upstream from the falls...a lovely hike with numerous little rapids and many stone outcroppings made for hopping about.
Keewaunaw Bay outside of Baraga.  Almost appears to be a lake because of a wild peninsula that locks in the eastern side.  But it is all Lake Superior.

FOCUS ON FLEECE

Wintertime Boer Goat(Wintertime Barqs X Wintertime Ladybug(GCH Fleece 2011 WI Sheep & Wool)--Coming two year old flecket horned Shetland ram.  He broke off his best horn as a lamb...other horn is clearing nicely.  Summer micron test of 22 AFD with low SD and CV.  Perfect tail.  Has produced one flecket black ewe lamb we are retaining in the flock.  He'll be put in a breeding group with a nice overview of our ewe flock for 2013 lambs.  B.G. completely rooed in early May of this year.

Wintertime B.o.B.--Not tested yet but his brother summer tested 19 AFD with a low SD and CV.  The density, fine crimp from tip to skin we desire along with the consistency from front to back.  This shot is taken at last rib.  B.o.B. is sired by Winter Sky Khan and out of Wintertime Alanis(black daughter of Wintertime Fudge out of Winter Sky Alafair who rooed this May).  He'll be put over a number of our finer black ewes, as we are focusing on producing very fine-fleeced true black Shetlands.

MOWING THE DRIVEWAY

The goats don't graze well and like to browse our woods instead, so I opened up a side gate and let the main flock out onto the driveway area to graze it down yesterday.

PUPPY TEETH

Tally is teething so everything is fair game for a good chewing.  She has learned quickly that people, shoes, cats, and our elderly dog aren't, so she improvises around the front yard.

PUPPY LOVE!

Meet Tally the newest member of our farm family.  She is eight weeks old and about 4 pounds of tri-color Corgi antics.   We had no idea when we pick her out of a litter of nine at four weeks of age just how special she would end up being.  She makes up her own games given just a paper towel tube or binder twine tied to a fence, goes wild at night just before bedtime and has a bladder the size of a small walnut which produes copious amounts of pee on very little water?   Our two 12 pound housecats avoid her like the plague and Pappy(our faithful 14 year old farm dog)keeps his distance and just wags his tail whenever she is out in the yard.
This is the look we get whenever she wants to insure we will keep her forever.  And we will.

BREEDING RAMS

We strive to only sell the very best of our ram lambs for breeding stock. Fortunately we have a local customer who purchases any ram lambs we feel aren't soft/fine enough or structurally correct enough or have temperament issues for butchering in the fall. Over the years we have sold a number of rams that have proven themselves to be prepotent for improving fleeces and producing good type in flocks of varied bloodlines and fleece types. Some of these rams are: Wintertime Jazz, Wintertime Fudge, Wintertime Black Forrest, Winter Sky Buster II, Wintertime Bond, Winter Sky Sandstone, and Winter Sky Khan. Future potential flock sires are shown below at 1-2 weeks of age. They will be evaluated as they grow and a few will be for sale at weaning and in the fall after being used for breeding. Annual micron tests on their parents is available. If interested in any of the below please contact us to be placed on a list. Wintertime Lexus--Moorit krunet scurred(?)ram lamb sired by Sheltrgpines Grand Luxe and out of Whistlestop 0427(Izzy).

Wintertime Esquire--Winter Sky Khan X Wintertime Vanity Fair(second place ewe lamb and second place best fleece on hoof at Jefferson in 2011)polled(?)smirslet moorit single.

Wintertime Blake--Winter Sky Khan X Wintertime Alanis(Wintertime Fudge X Winter Sky Alafair)--Twin moorit ram lamb carrying spots. Appears to be polled.

Wintertime B.o.B.--Twin black brother to Blake. Horned. No britch wool. Very fine, dense fiber throughout. Will be in a breeding pen this fall.

MORE 2012 LAMBS

Mustang Sally X Khan twin dark grey katmoget ewe lamb at less than 12 hours old. She is almost as tall as her dam already. And her brother is even larger(black with white on his head). Cannot imagine where Sally was keeping these two but she lambed without making a peep in between barn checks and is an awesome mother. Got to love these Shetlands! Winter Sky Mandalay with her Ewe'sHaveIt John Doe single fawn krunet ewe lamb "Milan". She is a carbon copy of her dam with the same exquisite fleece and no britch. Just hope she has a bit more of a tail on her as that is an issue with Mandalay.

This is Blake. Khan X Wintertime Alanis. A lovely twin moorit ram lamb with a little white on his poll. He wasn't happy about going outside to pose and stood still for just a minute.

And this is B.o.B. Also out of Alanis. Absolutely suede-soft black ram lamb with some white on his head. He almost glitters in the light. He will be staying put for a time to make some very fine black lambs for us.

The road is drying up and we can actually travel straight into town which gives us an extra two hours at home. Have fourteen lambs on the ground so far and five more due to lamb within the next ten days. Vanity Fair(second place Fleece On Hoof and ewe lamb at Jefferson in 2011)is due bred to Khan on Monday. We look forward to that lambing ever so much.
