FOCUS ON FLEECE

Wintertime Boer Goat(Wintertime Barqs X Wintertime Ladybug(GCH Fleece 2011 WI Sheep & Wool)--Coming two year old flecket horned Shetland ram.  He broke off his best horn as a lamb...other horn is clearing nicely.  Summer micron test of 22 AFD with low SD and CV.  Perfect tail.  Has produced one flecket black ewe lamb we are retaining in the flock.  He'll be put in a breeding group with a nice overview of our ewe flock for 2013 lambs.  B.G. completely rooed in early May of this year.

Wintertime B.o.B.--Not tested yet but his brother summer tested 19 AFD with a low SD and CV.  The density, fine crimp from tip to skin we desire along with the consistency from front to back.  This shot is taken at last rib.  B.o.B. is sired by Winter Sky Khan and out of Wintertime Alanis(black daughter of Wintertime Fudge out of Winter Sky Alafair who rooed this May).  He'll be put over a number of our finer black ewes, as we are focusing on producing very fine-fleeced true black Shetlands.

Hi Karen,
Beautiful fleeces!
Had the chance to meet you when you came to Ohio this summer. Wanted to ask, if a ewe has no or not much wool on her belly would she be a good candidate for rooing?
Thanks for your input.

I have found that ewes that shed their belly wool tend to have finer fleeces. All of our ewes and rams do shed their belly wool, but not all of them roo. But then again I don't wait until June or later to see if they'll do it then. I just do the ones that are obviously loosening up prior to our shearer coming the end of May. Hope this helps.
